The simple answer is never. After all, age is just a number and it could be a winning number regardless of what yours might be. Think of all of the superstars you love to watch on the big screen and chances are not all of them are under twenty-five.

You just have to abide by the same rules as anyone else who walks into an audition room – prepare, stay determined, have a thick skin. It is important to exude confidence even if you take a look at the competition and feel you are getting your start “too late.” Remember, you deserve to be there just the same as anyone else.
There are plenty of opportunities for actors who are mid-aged or older, and probably the best news is that there is a smaller pool of talent to compete with once you decide to take the plunge. Casting directors are looking for everyday people to play roles in television shows, commercials, and films, in every capacity from extras to featured roles. If you’ve got the right spark, don’t be afraid to start.
The truth is, ageism is a problem in any industry. If you’re looking to make a major career transition later in life, you will need the ability to persevere in the face of rejection. This doesn’t mean you don’t have the skills to be successful, and sooner or later, someone will take notice. It’s simply a matter of time.
You will need a professional headshot and, if you’ve never tried this thing, sign up for a class or two. See how it feels. If you love acting even more, keep at it. Practice different techniques and perfect your craft.
Headshots-wise, be careful of over-retouching. If you’re removing every fine line, you’ll soon become unrecognizable in person, and doing so will only appear as if you’re trying to hide something. You’ll want to come across as authentic to casting directors, so make sure your marketing materials reflect this mission.
Regardless of your age, the best way to get started is by continually putting yourself out there for roles that are a good fit. Don’t worry, there will be many.
