Change Your Look, Change Your Outlook

You’ve decided – new year, new you.  You’re looking to switch things up a bit, starting with your appearance.  Maybe a new cut is just the thing you need to turn heads at the next audition.  Or, more dramatic makeup will pair nicely with that bold outlook on life you’ve recently embraced.  Where to start?

First, you’ll probably want to take a peek at what’s trending in the beauty world these days to figure out what feels best.  Then, try perfecting a new hair, makeup, or fashion routine in your free time before showcasing it to the rest of the world.  Real life isn’t usually as glamorous as an episode of Extreme Makeover, after all.  You might consider changing just one or two aspects of your appearance before completely overhauling what you already know works.

Let’s say you’re digging Ombre hair, but you’ve never dared to dye.  Start with temporary or semi-permanent colors that dissipate within a few days before investing in anything longer-term.  It’s like dating.  You’ll be able to try out a variety of options before being married to a particular look.  This way, you can discover which ones you wear best.

And, nothing says “new you” like a totally different ‘do, insist the editors of Cosmopolitan.  They suggest snagging a set of clip-in hair extensions that match the color and texture of your natural hair.  This would be an especially drastic change for a maiden with a shorter mane.  Clip-ins can quickly and easily be removed when you decide you’re over it.

Another option is to simply choose more dramatic makeup shades than you normally would, or lighter, natural ones if you’re used to dark.  Never wear lipstick?  Try a bold red or bright pink.  Always layer on the shadow?  Skip it.  Used to a pencil liner?  Switch to liquid.  You can make subtle changes here and there or turn in your old stash entirely.  (Just a tip, however – you may want to keep some in a drawer for a while to be on the safe side, especially if you tend to change your mind frequently.)

Sick of the same old clothes in your closet?  If you’re not lucky enough to land a spot on What Not To Wear, but are looking for a fashion fix, try integrating one or two new pieces into your existing wardrobe and stick with more versatile items that complement a variety of outfits.  You might consider purchasing a scarf that can be worn a variety of ways around your neck or hair.  Or, pick up a new pair of kicks that can be worn with most of the bottoms you already own.  Visit a thrift shop for a unique and inexpensive find.

Whenever we choose to change our look, we’re likely to make waves, and making the right decisions can give us a much-needed confidence boost.  Confidence is key in entertainment.  Dare to be different!
