Signing with a modeling agency is every model’s dream!  It can signal that you’ve made it in the industry.  But you’ll need to know that you’re signing with a reputable company that will be there to support and guide you through the next steps in your career.  Here are a few tips for making sure you find a good fit, and what to do when you do.

The number one most important thing to do is research. Research, research, research.  You may have already heard of certain, well-established agencies.  However, there are lots of other opportunities out there, and if you don’t already live in New York and you’re not ready to move to New York City, you’ll want to get an idea of who’s close to home.

Treat your research efforts like you would any other project you take on that could potentially be life changing.  Just the same as any other career pursuit, you’ll want to make sure you find a modeling agency that seems to be well-suited for the direction you’re hoping to head in.  Start by looking at those in your immediate area by literally opening your web browser and typing this in so you can retrieve a list.  You may be surprised by the number of results that are returned – whether this be a ton or very little.  If you do not get any results, you’ll want to expand your geographic search, and you may have to travel just a bit further to make this happen.

Once you get a list of potential agencies you’re interested in, it’s time to prepare.  Visit the modeling agency’s webpage and search for information on how to land an interview.  The site should give you a general idea of the marketing materials you’ll need to have handy and how to submit these.  Nothing will frustrate an agent more than receiving a submission missing key elements.  So, you’ll need to pay attention to every detail in your submission package, including each required piece.

Next, you’ll want to get your package together.  This will likely include a composite (also referred to as a ‘zed’) card, any tear sheets you have, your resume, and your full contact information.  Now is also the time to double check your social media is up to par if the modeling agency is requiring links.  If you don’t have the pages it’s looking for, establish these before moving forward with your submission.

Once received, you’ll want to prepare for an invitation to come in.  The modeling agency may be holding open calls in an effort to bring in a handful of new talent, or you may get a private interview invitation.  Either way, this is an uber-important step.  You’ll want to know exactly what you’re supposed to wear and how to do your hair and makeup.  Generally, an agency will want you to keep it simple with little makeup, a natural hair style, and a streamlined black and white outfit – white top with black slacks or a black skirt.

When you come in, be yourself.  It can be intimidating, and it’s essential that you ground yourself in that moment and exude confidence.  Don’t compare yourself to anyone else in the room.  This is your journey and your chance to shine!
