10 Questions You Should Ask Before Signing With an Agency

Signing with a talent or modeling agency can be an exciting step in your career, but it is also a business decision that deserves careful consideration. Whether you are an actor, model, commercial talent, or performer, understanding how an agency operates can help you avoid misunderstandings and choose representation that supports your goals.

Before signing any contract, ask these 10 important questions.

1. What Type of Talent Do You Represent?

Not every agency handles the same kinds of clients. Some focus on fashion models, while others specialize in actors, commercial talent, children, voice-over artists, or influencers. Make sure your career direction matches the agency’s strengths.

2. Is the Contract Exclusive or Non-Exclusive?

An exclusive agreement may prevent you from working with other agencies in certain markets or categories. A non-exclusive contract may offer more flexibility. Ask exactly what restrictions apply before committing.

3. How Long Does the Contract Last?

Find out the length of the agreement and whether it renews automatically. You should also understand what happens if you decide to leave before the contract ends.

4. What Commission Does the Agency Charge?

Agencies typically earn money by taking a percentage of your bookings. Ask about commission rates, additional deductions, and whether different types of jobs have different fees.

5. Are There Any Upfront Costs?

Ask whether you are expected to pay for portfolio development, comp cards, website listings, classes, photoshoots, or other services. Understand which expenses are optional and which are required.

6. How Do You Submit Talent for Jobs?

Knowing how the agency finds opportunities can give you a better idea of what representation will look like. Ask whether they submit through casting platforms, direct industry relationships, advertising clients, production companies, or other sources.

7. Who Will Be My Main Contact?

Find out who you will communicate with about auditions, bookings, availability, and career questions. Clear communication is especially important when last-minute casting opportunities arise.

8. How Often Can I Expect Audition Opportunities?

No legitimate agency can guarantee regular work, but they should be able to explain how often talent in your category is typically submitted for suitable opportunities.

9. How and When Will I Be Paid?

Ask how payments are processed after completing a job. Find out whether clients pay you directly or through the agency, how long processing usually takes, and what deductions may appear.

10. What Do You Expect From Your Talent?

Successful representation works both ways. Ask about availability requirements, response times, portfolio updates, training expectations, social media guidelines, and professional conduct.

Take Time Before Signing

Being offered representation can feel like a major breakthrough, but there is no reason to rush into an agreement you do not fully understand. Read the entire contract, ask questions about unclear terms, and keep copies of everything you sign.

The right agency should feel like a professional business partner. When expectations, communication, commissions, and responsibilities are clear from the beginning, you can focus more confidently on building your career and making the most of future casting opportunities.
